Day 6 - Rushmore to Bighorn
As Jonah looked at the sky last night he noticed a few gray clouds, I said I thouhght it would be fine, so we went to sleep in the tent. Well the campsite was in the middle of an open dirt field and we startlingly woke up to a torrential downpour. We thought we would stay in the tent just because it couldn’t last too long. Well we were wrong, about an hour later we woke up again to another crazy thunderstorm with lightening like I have never seen. I thought that was it but I woke up another time to a crazy wind storm blowing our tent side to side. It was a bit terrifying and I didn’t sleep much at all. I guess I can now say I weathered the storm ⛈
We made a quick breakfast then hurried on out to Mount Rushmore. Hey, we gotta do some touristy things.. right? It was cool to learn some more history on Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Roosevelt along with cool facts on how the crazy structure was built. Did you know that most of the carving was done by dynamite? Pretty cool.. We went on a little hike around to get some better views of the masterpiece.
We spent another few hours in the car to drive to our next location.. Bighorn National Forest. The elevation was so high and the views were so beautiful. Our plan was to drive to the lake but it was starting to get dark so we found another amazing spot to spend the night. It was off the main road, pine trees everywhere and the air was so crisp. It was probably 60 something degrees out but felt really nice.
I picked up a bottle of wine and we drank it with dinner. It seemed like the perfect time to jam out so we did and we came up with a pretty catchy song! Can’t wait to share..
Afterwards we went to bed in the tent and layered up because it was cool night.
